The First Rule

An excerpt taken from page 30 of Zen Fables for Today:

 
… At last they reached the monastery. While drying off and eating a late supper in the kitchen, the student confessed to the teacher that what he feared most was that he would die without attaining enlightenment.

 
Enlightenment,” confessed the teacher, “is not the sun that shines all day but the lightning that gives only quick glimpses – thus allowing us to navigate from one troubled place to another.”
